Photographer's Note
Do you ever get fed up listening in the pub to people telling you about the wonderful cars which they all drive? The BMW's, Mercedes or even Porches and Ferraris? Well, get yourself one of these and you can amaze your fellow drinkers by telling them that you drive an "Alldays & Onions"! Now that would be impressive, wouldn't it?
This was taken just before the "regularity run" prior to the Biggar Vintage Car Rally last weekend. The car is a 1912 Alldays & Onions, a rare vehicle manufactured in Birmingham following the amalgamation of two very, very old engineering companies, Alldays (dating from 1720) and Onions (dating from 1650). Vehicle production ceased in 1918.
This car represents a huge amount of restorative work on the part of its owner. If you're interested, you can follow details of the car's restoration by following the pages here and, if you want to see her running, there's a little video clip here too.
Shot in RAW and converted and edited in PSE9.

Hello John,
I drive onions very often too, as well as cucumbers, tomatoes etc. ...from our local supermarket ;-D.
I love your note.
The old car is a really beautiful and it is funny how the background colours match with it as if the car owner had ordered it for the show. That guy has not given his best smile though.
The community of old car drivers seems to vary here, having only the devotion to their four wheeled darlings in common, as well as you can see various figures driving cabriolets, but I have a strange feeling that I have always seen old fat ugly men on Harley Davidson. Any idea why is that?
Best regards
R.

My goodness John! Nostalgia at its very best,an extremely rare model photographed in pristine condition, the owner appears positively scruffy against the immaculate vehicle.
I bet he will be proud of a copy of this one.
Super shot.
Best regards Les.

John
Ok, I'm impressed. I thought I knew a thing or two about motorcars, but you have the better of me; I have never heard of an Alldays and Onions ! Let alone seen one !
And impressed too by your sublimely sharp picture, postively oozing detail from every pixel. A shame the owner, driver at least, did not take the occasion quite to heart, though I suppose the goggles provide an air of practical authenticity ! ( shame about the haphazard attachment of the 239, temporary or no )
Not that those details detract from your VERY fine photography, as indeed are all the ones in this mini series, for which I apologise for not giving the credit they deserve...
Is that a Series 111 Silver Cloud in the background, or a Magnette, it is hard to get the scale from such a small sample..
regards
Martin

Hi John again, I read in the answer to Gunnar that you have also an old car. Did you take part in this show also? And why we haven't seen it? You should have come to Keswick, I would love to have a small excursion in the old Austin. What a beauty this one. The green shiny front and pink leather sits.. The guy also fits perfectly. amazing, it is nearly hundred years old!
Warm regards

Hi John
Jeez look at the mug on this bloke he's got a face like a slapped botty! If I owned a magnificent car like that you couldn't wipe the smile off. Ah well, I hear these vintage car owners are weird n wonderful people, so maybe he was having a bad hair day ;) great shot of this superb machine and you've captured the quirkiness of his owner masterfully. Thanks for sharing, enjoy your morning.
Cheers
Lisa
