Photographer's Note
Rust is a general term for a series of iron oxides. Colloquially, the term is applied to red oxides, formed by the reaction of iron and oxygen in the presence of water or air moisture. There are also other forms of rust, such as the result of the reaction of iron and chlorine in an environment deprived of oxygen, such as rebar used in underwater concrete pillars, which generates green rust. Several forms of rust are distinguishable visually and by spectroscopy, and form under different circumstances. Rust consists of hydrated iron oxides Fe2O3·nH2O and iron oxide-hydroxide (FeO(OH), Fe(OH)3). Given sufficient time, oxygen, and water, any iron mass will eventually convert entirely to rust and disintegrate. Surface rust provides no protection to the underlying iron unlike the formation of patina on copper surfaces.
Rusting is the common term for corrosion of iron and its alloys, such as steel. Many other metals undergo equivalent corrosion, but the resulting oxides are not commonly called rust. Captured this Cog on an old cart at RHS, Hyde Hall Garden's, love the colours, texture's and antiquity.

Hello Iain
C'est très beau et réussi.
Bon cadrage serré et belle lumière bien maîtrisée préservant le naturel des couleurs.
La passion pour la photo est aussi un engrenage impitoyable dont on ne plus sortir.

Hello Iain,
You managed a very colorful shot over the old piece-of-machine, exposed to mist and sun - so the rust achieved a very colorful virtue.
Excelent choise,
Ike

Hi Iain
Superb close up work. Excellent focus, pin sharp and excellent detail of the matured aged rust in a nice range of colors and textures. The attention to closeness makes it very pronounced, a hidden treasure can only be seen by keen eyes Well done, Congrats.

Hi Ike, rust can be very photogenic. We saw a lot of rusty excavators in Threkeld . Here fine colours of this wheel, nice blurred background. Well done.
Warm regards

Hello Lain,
A very creative shot indeed! I like the close up shot of this rusted old cog you spotted and got a nice picture out of it. Superb colors and I like that blurred background.

Hello Iain,
Lovely rich colours in this rusty piece of mechanism!
As it is on an old cart, I suspect it might be some mechanism for raising or lowering a tailgate or for applying brakes or something like that. Whatever its purpose, it is clearly a worm-driven cog. That split pin looks a bit precarious to me - looks like it might just fall out at any moment were it not firmly rusted in place.
A fine shot of a small part of an interesting piece of engineering which has suffered the ravages of time! Well spotted, excellent composition and colours, perfect exposure and spot-on sharpness!
Kind Regards,
John.

This is different ! But the sort of tight image I like to look at, but never seem to notice or think to record myself. Lucky we are all different!
The hint of remaining functionality offered by the section of worm gear is a neat bonus, belied rather by the cobwebs suggesting a degree of inactivity.
This tight image would be perfect with the complete gear, the crop to the top spoils its symmetry - but thats picky !
Great note, again..
TFS !

Martin

Clouse up ....bellissimo , con i suoi colori antichi

Thanks for your visit, dear Lain.
Gee, I missed the traditionnal four o'clock tea; it's now five as I write this critic of rusted gears that remind me of "The Modern Times" by Charlie Chaplain in wich Charlot was "engaged" himself through rolling gears!
You post an appealing flash back of the pionners era.
Cheers.
Robert
