Life's a Beach Hut, a photo from North Yorkshire, England

Photographer's Note

Beach huts at the fishing and seaside town of Whitby. These can be rented from the local council. In some seaside resorts beach huts similar to this are sold for thousands of pounds. It's good that these can be used by people who perhaps wouldn't be able to afford to buy.
If you are like me, you will be curious to see inside one of these. I was lucky enough to pass one that had its door open and as I peeked in I was very impressed and at its delightful interior. The tenant was sitting outside and I asked who was responsible for the interior design. He modestly said he was and I congratulated him. He was especially pleased with one of the cushions (the one with Whitby sewn on it)as he had asked for this to be made to his design.

Hi Bev,
This is a very nice take on the famous beach huts. Wile I have seen them before, this is a very original composition you got by placing them at the top of the stairs, the young girl of course providing great life to the scene. Thanks for the extra photo too, I always wondered what these looked like inside, quite cozy!

This is a very good photo. I am actually glad too see it's not a partially desaturated shot but that the dark gloominess of the wall and steps is totally natural :-). It increases the intensity of the bright parts. I really like the colourful beach huts and the girl running down the stairs, as well as the diagonals created by the huts and the steps. The light falls very nicely on the girl's hair. I hope you like this photo as much as I.

Hello Bev, I do not remember these huts from Whitby, how it is possible that missed them :(. Thank you very much for the interior, of course, I was curious what is inside. I would also congratulate the tenant. it is really del;ighful cozy place in such a small room. And good idea was to include this running girl. Very nice composition, I l;ike it very much.

I found them on the map. I was in the abbey and near the Cook's monument but in December the day is short, there was no time to go to promenade.

These colorful beach huts sure provide a photographer with a lot of opportunity, and I really like what you've done with them here. They immediately draw the eye towards the top of the frame, but I absolutely love the fact you included this young gal, who just happens to be sporting a color that would fit right into the line-up. :) Her break-away moment makes a nice link between the top and bottom halves of the frame. Great 2/3rds 1/3rd composition between the bright strip of colourful huts on the top and the contrasting tones of the stone wall. I like that you have included the girl in the shot as it ads a good dynamic feel and a good human element. You have find a nice way to portray these photogenic subjects.

Beach huts to rent, that sounds like a good idea Bev! The interior you show in your WS looks wonderfully stylish and cosy; a super retreat for a cold, wet day.

As to this shot, the huts make a colourful contrast to the gritty, harshness of the sea wall. The young girl adds a liveliness to the scene.

Hi Bev,

Whitby is a place I want to visit soon and your picture has strengthened my desire to go there. How nice too that you were able to capture a view inside one of these huts - that looks remarkably homely and cosy - just the place to sit with a book and a cuppa should the weather turn nasty. And how nice also that many of these huts can be rented.

This is a lovely shot and just so different from the usual photographs we see of rows of beach huts. I suspect that on this day you were blessed with a horrid washed out white sky and you were clever to keep that well outside the frame. You have used the line of the concrete steps to lead us upwards to the row of multicoloured huts and what better way to adorn those rather plain steps than with the inclusion of this young lady running down them and making a wonderful foreground feature.

Despite the strong light and contrasts and the deep shadows, you have managed to preserve full details in both the brightest bits and the deepest shade, the colours are delightful and the details and sharpness are excellent.

A place I would like to discover also with Blackpool (a little more than 1 hour train from Manchester).

Super framing with the stairs right in the diagonal of the image, inhabited by this backlighted young girl, and we have the pleasure to discover the colorfull row of beach huts at the top.

A well managed exposure by shooting into the light showing these standout colourful beach huts, an image which has been very well observed and composed, stuffed with great tones well worked with the location, given the challenging direction of light. Adding the young lady is a good idea as she adds another dimension and the element of movement with wonderful catch light making the image extremely vibrant. So I would say it is nicely presented and constructed, good taste is a useful tool in creating images. Enjoy your real cool!! additional shot with its dominant blue and specks of high spirited colours. Impressive lens work, My congrats

it`s nice to see that the colourful beach huts have survived the ravages of winter,they do make an interesting backdrop to a nicely conceived shot with the back light playing an important part in a very attractive beach scene.
I also enjoy the presence of the girl on the diagonal steps.
