Photographer's Note

The joint name for the railways in Berner Oberland is Jungfraubahnen [Jungfrau Railways] comprising of six privately owned, spectacular mountain railways. They were all built toward the end of the 19th century and even now, more than a hundred years later, have lost none of their fascination.

All but one are located in the area south of Interlaken, connecting it to well-known tourist resorts like Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Mürren, Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg. And from there, last but not least, the line naming it all - to Jungfraujoch/Top of Europe at 3.454m (11'333ft) and Europe's highest-altitude railway station – the Jungfraubahn (JB) itself.

From Interlaken the Bernese Oberland Railway (BOB) take visitors into the valleys of the Lütschine river to glorious Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen. These two places are connected by the Wengernalp Railway (WAB) - the world's longest continuous cogwheel railway (19km/12mi) - taking passengers to Kleine Scheidegg from both sides; one along the famous Eiger North Wall and the other via Wengen.

My photo shows the new (2005) WAB train 143 arriving at Grindelwald from Grund – the town's second railway station situated at the bottom of the valley – after only a five minute climb. Trains arrive and depart every 30 minutes, and always with a connection to the BOB trains to and from Interlaken.

After a very brief stop the train will return to Grund and further – in opposite direction - up to Kleine Scheidegg, where passengers have to change for the onward journey down to Wengen/Lauterbrunnen. There's a simple reason for these procedures, as safety regulations state that the main cogwheel engine always has to be at the lower end of the train.

Most farmers in the region work part-time at the railway to make a decent income!
