Stockholm Steelband, a photo from Sodermanland, Svealand

Photographer's Note

Going for a walk on Södermalm island last Saturday I was drawn already from a distance to a small square at a street corner by the rhythms of Caribbean music. I found the Stockholm Steelband entertaining the participants of the Stockholm Marathon. The runners never had time to stop to listen, but I stayed here for a while, listening and taking photos. It was much more fun than the Marathon race.

These clever musicians really made my day. They were not just playing well but also showing a captivating enthusiasm and joy. Watching them was just as fun as listening to them. I think this lady expresses that enthusiasm perfectly.

If I managed to count them correctly the band consisted of thirteen ladies and two men.

Hi Gert,in fact this is certainly more lively and interesting than the marathon, a nice surprise with particular music from this large group and many colors. All 3 photos show the enthusiasm of the band members. Stockholm is not where you would commonly expect to see a steel band but why not a touch of Trinidad? A good series of photos.

Hello Gert, More fun to observe the ladies in colourful dresses playing Caribbean music than the tired men in Marathon. Nice view against the blue wall, some flags, there is also a reflection in one steelpan. Great expression of the lady pannist. Pity you didn't provide the short video and we cannot hear the music. I like such rhythms very much. In Cuba, it was fantastic to hear the music on every corner. I'm afraid that there will be no music in Costa Rica.

Et godt billede med trommeslageren i det caribiske band. Med deres farverige tøj og den blå baggrund med nogle palmetræer ser det snarere ud som et billede fra en tropiske ø end det centrale Stockholm. Kvinden ser desuden meget entusiastisk ud.

Hello Gert,

I wonder if this is something particular to Sweden but Caribbean bands that I have witnessed are mainly composed of men. I think this must have been great fun to experience. Caribbean music is always so full of movement and fun; it's difficult not to feel happy when you are listening. I suspect you were moving in time to the music, too!
Your main photograph, full of colour and enthusiasm, brings out the atmosphere of the moment.
Your w/s is a much better portrait shot.

A touch of tropical Trinidad comes to Stockholm! Good sharpness and nice repetition of the circular steel drums. Excellent daily life scene with superb colour and lighting. Tfs!

The three compositions of this band are great, the faces of its components convey the joy and good rhythm with which they livened up the street, without a doubt that the race was less attractive. Great color of the ladies' blouses.

A great series of photos of a band playing Caribbean music.Musicians' emotions well shown. When you listen to music, you don't get tired like during a marathon. Good work, fine presentation.
