Photographer's Note

The background shows a panorama of iconic buildings in the heart of Stockholm. Without the details in the foreground this could have been a decent postcard. But that was not my intention. It was mainly for these colourful items I took the photo.

I took this standing barely a stone's throw from the Prime Ministers office (but throwing stones is not recommended here) aiming the camera south towards Gamla stan (Old Town) and the separate island of Riddarholmen (Knight's islet).

The grey building to the left, of which only a small part is seen, is a 17th century former private palace today housing the Supreme Court. It is mainly famous in history because Marie Antoinette's former lover Axel von Fersen (a high government official) was lynched to death in front of it in 1810, a consequence of a power struggle in the wake of a military coup which had overthrown the King a year earlier.

The large building with the green copper roof is the House of Knights, also from the 17th century, functioning roughly like the British House of Lords before the Parliament was reformed in 1886 to become more representative of the developing society. Today it is a place where I suppose the aristocracy gather to grieve their loss of privileges.

The two pavilions were added in the 1870's and are now used as offices.

The bridge is called Vasabron, also built in the 1870's to provide a convenient connection between the mainland and the Old Town.

To the right you see the tower of Riddarholmskyrkan, the former Royal burial church. The church was inaugurated about 1300, but the iron spire was added around 1840 during restorations after a fire.

The red building from the 1880's in front of the church used to house the National Archives but is now used for "events" and conferences. To the right are the offices of 'Norstedts', one of the major Swedish publishers which has introduced a number of Nobel Prize winners to the Swedish audience.
