Photographer's Note
This photo was taken from Stenpiren in central Gothenburg. I passed by here and saw the light on the distant smoke and decided to stop, just to take some pictures. The light situation did not last many minutes! From left to right you can see the Sailor´s Tower, with a statue of the sailor´s wife on top. She is supposed to be looking towards the sea, waiting for her husband to return. But in fact, she is positioned towards the land on the other side of the river, so she might be waiting for her husband to return back from the shipyard. Then you can see the big ferry to Denmark and closer, the small ferry across the river. The left smoke is from an energy plant and the smoke to the right from a refinery. Between the smokes is the crane, remaining from the shipyard. And with this rare photo, I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Hello Gunnar,
Golden hour at the harbour, with marine traffic and special glow of light on the smoke coming from the chimneys.
Even with this mild light condition, picture is clear and distinct.
My best regards,
Ike

Hej Gunnar,
Gert

Hello Gunnar,
It is always a pleasant surprise to see a picture of you on TrekEarth and especially if it is such a beautiful sunset.
The details of the photo are beautiful with the smoke from the chimneys in the sun and before that the houses that catch the last sunlight of the day.
The ferry in the shadow quietly sneaks to the other side.
Wonderful work.
I wish you also a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Hello Gunnar,
A beautiful winter photo with the dark, warm colours in the sunset sky behind the chimneys and ships in the harbour. The smoke is lit wonderfully as well. Excellent photo, taken at exactly the right moment. God jul!

Hi Gunnar
Harbour sunset enhanced by subtle exposure control with excellent highlights throughout; the moving boat adds enhanced by the 'smoking stacks' which is an icing on the roll.
The warm sky colour is nicely counterpointed by the blue sea. Your lens skill is applauded, Congrats

Hello Gunnar,
How lovely to see you posting and thank you for your kind greetings!
You are right about the rapidity with which such lighting opportunities change! It is the same when taking sunsets or sunrises!
You timed this perfectly so that the smoke is catching the light and appearing to glow!
The photograph is very well composed, too, each important element, strongly placed.
Thank you for your very informative notes. I was able to follow the route across the scene and identify features as I progressed.
Have a happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year,
Bev :-)

Hello Gunnar,
How nice to see you back posting again! I have to confess that I have not been quite so diligent on TE as I used to be but I really do miss seeing the many beautiful photographs and interesting notes from you - especially from the "old days" when we used to have some wonderful discussions with Peter ("Graffer") on composition!
This is a delightful shot of which the "star of the show" is definitely the clouds of smoke or water vapour issuing from those tall chimneys and beautifully backlit by the low sunlight against a dark and moody sky. You have composed and taken this image perfectly and we can still see excellent detail not only in those bright emissions but also in the deepest shadows.
Excellent!
Kind Regards,
John.
P.S. And a Merry Christmas and Very Happy New Year to you and your family too!
P.P.S. I see that you are now using a Canon EOS M3. A few years ago I bought one of the original Canon EOS M cameras - I managed to buy it quite cheaply because that camera was never very popular on account of its desperately slow autofocus, but I found it took excellent pictures. A few months ago I decided to buy a second-hand EOS M5 to take on my weekly country walks with friends and it has been wonderful - it has a viewfinder (which I really missed with the EOS M) and the image quality is superb for such a small camera. I still have a DSLR but the little M5 is brilliant and much easier to carry when walking. I believe that the M3 is very similar though I would miss the viewfinder.
Very Best Wishes,
John.
