It was the residence of the archbishops of Toledo in Alcalá de Henares. Its construction is known from the 13th century, with extensions, improvements and restorations being carried out until the 19th century.

In its architecture, styles such as Mudejar, Renaissance and Baroque follow one another, and the intervention, in the 16th century, by Alonso de Covarrubias, is especially notable. In this building different Castilian monarchs came to reside, synods and councils were held and the youngest daughter of the Catholic Monarchs and future Queen of England, Catherine of Aragon, and the German Emperor Ferdinand, son of Juana I “la Loca” were born .

In addition, it is famous for being the place where the first interview was held between the Catholic Monarchs and Christopher Columbus.
