Photographer's Note

In the middle of the Las Bardenas Reales desert, we were surprised to meet this small pond, the Balsa de Cortinillas, in Las Cortinas area ! Not far from there is a wider wet land that hosts many migrating birds. Yes, there is was water in the the Las Bardenas Reales desert ! The rains are sufficient to full a few water points. The rains in Las Bardenas Reales are rare but very strong when they fall. On storms the dry canyons become torrents and the clay soil turns to so slippery that it is hard to keep standing ! No need to say that being surprised by a storm in Las Bardenas Reales is a very bad idea ! The mountain surrouding the pond is very typical of Las Bardenas Reales with its coloured stripes. I used a grey filter and a graduated filter to make this picture so that I could have a long exposure time on the water to make it smooth and to keep details in the grey sky.
