Photographer's Note

It was a bitterly cold, foggy, gray winter Sunday. I was hiking cross-country through deep winter forest toward the top of Mt. Blegos, a beautiful, not very high and 'less important' mountain standing as a fore-guard of the true Alpine ridges west of it. Young beeches stood motionless, covered with white crystals, the gift of the last snow storm. Plant life was stalled, frozen, waiting for better times. Only the shapes of the trunks and branches sang their melody. A walk through a symphony.

The 35 mm slide was scanned by Nikon CoolScan IV-ED. Using Level Equalization control I increased the contrast a bit, then I gave a pinch more saturation to the only brown leaves in the picture. Next I had to control hue. The picture was taken without any filter but color temperature of the scene was very high. Color picker tool and analysis of the color of the snow told me that there is too much green and blue. So I added some red. Unsharp mask was set to 40%, radius 1. The background was hand masked off with wide mask feathering to preventing grain increase of the already blurred background.
