Photographer's Note
Few people have the courage to dream while awake. Too few. Many consider it to be a crime. Too many.
This sheppard is one of the people who has to dream in order to stay awake..thinking he is lucky for spending his life in the wild? He probably dreams of a life in the city, away from the sweet smell of grass and dunn.
I chose this out of the lot i had taken, because it clearly shows him turning his back on his ordinary life, on the trees that shade him, on the hills that protect him, on the sheep that feed him.
Rugged, yet sensitive enought to be a dreamer, he kisses the tobacco-filled smoke that his cigarette awarded him with. Closes his eyes and nods his head. He is not young anymore.
To dream is heroic.
This is an ode to this romanian Don Quijote. Praise all like him, my friends..
Bogdan.

Very nice portrait. I like the composition as well as the contrast between the dark background and the face of the shepherd. The roughness of the face and the fact that it is looking away from the camera adds something to this photo.

Your pictures are great; unfortunatelly pictures from Romania in TE aren't too good - often very banal - Your pictures are exception - they are so touching, so story-telling; one can feel Your bond with the subjects..

Very strong portrait, Bogdan.
I also find Romanies' faces very expressive and good for taking portraits.
An excelent light control here as well as composition followed by useful note!
TFS!

Your potrait is very strong and rich Bogdan. And it goes very well with your note too. In the potrait, your strongest point is the rich, textured and saturated expression of the sheepherd. Very well captured Bogdan.

You are a poet as well as a photographer Bogdan. I love your note. I like your brooding photograph as well. This hardly fits the image I would propose for a shepherd, but then I know nothing or Romania. Shepherds to me are part of the Passion Play and they roam the hills of Galilee, not the cold climes to the north. Nonetheless I welcome this image, closeup to the man enjoying his cigarette as the sheep he tends enjoy the lush grass. You put him to one side with shallow depth of field so he remains the focus of our interest, as he should, in his camoflage jacket and warm hat. This is a fine image Bogdan to go with your poetic note. Thanks for sharing your work with us.

Excellent portrait. I like the exposure of the expressive face and subtle background of trees and sheeps. Nice framing and really an excellent composition. Nice catch!

Very nice portrait. This photo says a lot and you have provided nice light treatment to his face. I really like the fact that he's not looking at the camera. This is a portrait you should be very proud of. The cigarette really adds to the shot when you start looking at the small details you've captured.

This is great Bogdan. Your words are like music to my ears. I could read your notes all day...:) Before I read your note I was going to comment on you positioning him in the corner of the image turning his back on his herd, but you took the word right out of my mouth (or away from my fingers since I am typing huh :) about him wanting to drift off in his mind... The sharpness is amazing and the fill flash worked perfectly here. The exposure is great! I love the D100 :) It's just an amazing image Bogdan...

one of the better shots i have seen in the last few days. good contrast, dark, sharp, and good shallow DOF. nicely combined fg and bg.

Like the way he is positioned in the frame, the hat, the fingers holding the cig, his expression and his look pointed down. A very fine portrait. Great colors and light too. The fill flash did the trick here I am guessing.

It has everything that I expect in a portrait. A narrative background, a meaningful face, good composition, a little disturbing but awakening elements, here contrast and grains. Excellent !

Again, a wonderful portrait Bogdan! Perfectly composed and exposed. I find the light on his face a wonderful focus point. You've chosen an ideal moment when he was not looking into the camera!

Fantastic! Excellent use of colour, the man's expression (and lines on his face) are wonderful and expressive, amazing light (and shadow), and finally a fine, fine note. This is really well done Bogdan. Wow.

Excellent composition here Bogdan. Wonderful pose of your subject (looking outside of the frame carries a lot of story...porbably drifting). The DOF is spot-on to provide the context. Congrats...

This is really cool Bogdan. The very contrasty light and look work so well to create empathy for your subject. The tight crop works well, as does the fact that he is looking out of the frame (which is normally against the rules). Your DOF is excellent as well, deep enough to make out the sheep, shallow enough to highlight the man. Nice post processing.

Bun portret ca de obicei, expresie batatorita dar nu umila. Excelenta imagine.

Voila! A picture that shows a way of life, but with a lot of symbolism which is well described in your note. You even defied the composition rules by placing the man looking to the close border of the pic instead of placing him to the left with a lot of space in front of him... and it works just great, another symbolism of the trapped situation he is in.
The question that I ask myself is how can you take such a close-up picture without the man looking at you, I'm sure if I tried I would have a stare.

hello Bogdan-
I think this shot is quite good the color is so vital and the darken tones look good as well. the contrast is really something else this is an interesting capture. I think the way you composed it works quite nicely thanks for sharing this one.
I love the note you wrote as well one of the best I've read here on TE!
oh yea one last thing else something about the beauty mark on his nose I keep looking at, honestly I look around the whole frame it still takes me to it for somew reason, I might have cloned stamped that out Bogdan IMO.
have a great day.

Oops I missed this masterpiece, I think this is about as good as it gets, when it comes to portraits. The expression, the compo, the context in the background, all just right, fav.

Good portrait of expression of the sheppard and a dary hard contrast in the background another way to mask a out of focus backgroundin favour of the target. Excellent Bogdan.

I like the heavy contrastof the picture and the de-romanticising text related to his life. I bet when/if he smiles he does that fully though! I feel as if I know people like him in cities too - perhaps the ones that have left the frying pan for the fire!

Hi Bogdan,
This is human photography at its best. Great insightful comment. I cant help but think of the book "the alchemist".

Great picture, but I rate this one just for chosing one. All your shots portraying rumenian humanity are simply wonderful. I am coming to Romania this summer, I hope to find the human richness that you are presenting to us in a so generous way...
Best,
