Photographer's Note
There are seven varieties of the sturgeon that once used to swim from the Black Sea, up the Danube River Delta, as far as Vienna, and even to Germany. Those days ended in 1972 with the Iron Gates Dam on the border of Serbia & Romania. There was no provision made by the USSR to install fish ladders. To their credit, both Serbia and Romania have declared the Iron Gates reservoir catchment area a national park. But all 7 species are now critically endangered due to overfishing, poaching and the aforementioned environmental issues. Sturgeon are an anadromous fish that needs to migrate upstream in rivers from the Black Sea to spawn. The sturgeon (beluga) was the main source of black caviar. Ukraine also has several large dams built when it was a part of the USSR. Just a quick grab shot here right before the Tulcea Aquarium switched the lights off. This large fish is 2-3 metres long but they can grow to 6 metres and live 100 years. Out of town are several fish hatcheries where the Romanian Government is doing what it can to restock the Danube River & its tributaries. Not technically perfect but there are so very few shots (if any) on TE, that I decided to post it anyway. More info here:

Hello Chris,
As you say, not technically perfect, but still quite interesting. The closest I ever was to a sturgeon was a can of caviar bought at Baku airport.

Bonjour Chris,

Belo trabalho e excelente nota.
Parabéns e abraço

Hello Chris,
A good photo of this group of impressive fish with their long bodies and pointy tails. I like how you included some others around the biggest one in the middle. Well done.

Hi Chris,At risk of extinction in the areas described in your notes, but this fish has instead become a real problem in the rivers of northern Italy, an imported species has reproduced quickly and is causing the extinction of smaller species due to its voracity. A species that has always been known for its precious eggs which, as you know, cost a lot. No problem with the quality of the photo, you were right to show it. Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Hi Chris
Sturgeon are hardly the most pretty fish but they are imposing. A good snapshot of this one. And ... did you tuck into caviar to help with their endangered status?
cheers
Ian

I saw a giant one in a museum in Kazan, but it wasn't alive. despite the blur the image is very nice to see and we can notice as exotic and rustic and primitive these fishes are. I hope they will can swim again in the european river as in the past. Some brazilian dams has stairs for the wild fishes to climb, but in itaipu dam this can be difficult because it is a stairs 200 meters high.
take care
jorge
