Women in Black, a photo from Coimbra, North

Photographer's Note

This is Porta Férrea, one of the entrances to the Coimbra University. We met there two students in traditional student uniforms. All black. We had a chat with them, but I have absolutely no idea what we were talking about. I think they were collecting money for a cause. It was a hot day and after a short chat and a photo with them I wanted to take a photo of them and the entrance, but I was to shy to ask them to pose for me again. As you can see one of them went to drink some water, which is probably not the most photogenic pose one could wish for. I am still glad I had just them in the scene without the group of tourists who arrived shortly after.

Witaj Mariusz

The portal looks similar to the baroque gateways in Lecce Italy, but the huge b&w tile creation of the woman in the fg is unique to this town. Good colour, sharpness & framing. Tfs!

That's the amazing mosaic I remember from my visit on the entrance to the low scholl & chappel.
On my picture, I tried to concetrate upon the entrance and art details depicted - but with the mosaic is a great attraction as well here.

A good photo of the students in their long black dresses in front of the beautiful university entrance. The mosaic in black and white in the foreground looks great as well.

Maybe a show with the Ladies in black, also my favorite colour.
Maybe though us dance past, my wfe and I have much danced in danceshool!
Nice photographed, as colours as presentation.

I really like this scene. The gate and the art on the floor are beautiful, and the two women bring the scene to life. They look mysterious in those black robes. :-) This view looks more elegant with the two students, and it would have had a totally different feeling to it with a group of tourists. Take care!

Hello Mariusz,

What an amazing mosaic!
It completely dominates attention, before making a subtle link with the ladies in black. They seem like the most perfect link to what we have been viewing in the f/g.
The archway, with its pillars, statues and swags makes the perfect setting.

The slight lens distortion just doesn't seem to matter.

last time I visited this gate they hadn't built this mosaic and probably these students weren't born yet. an excellent inclusion of the famous local students in black. the gate itself is fabulous.

Hello Mariusz, the two students are a vital element to this scene in my opinion.
They provide alternative focal points as we have the wonderful mosaic, and the beautiful entrance to the university.

I can't quite tell whether this is a mosaic on the floor or a beautiful decoration of street tiles as they often have in Portugal.
In any case, it is very nicely done and from your point of view the figure leads us well to the fantastic decorated portal. With even a nice view of the white building in the back.
I certainly did not see this 'mosaic' in 1985. Could it have been made more recently?
Black student uniforms seem bizarre to me. It reminds me of the clothes of the older ladies in the south of Europe.

Magnificent this cover of the University that you have captured in an extraordinary POV, with this wonderful pavement that I think reproduces some of the queens of Portugal, the students with their characteristic black attire, it is an ideal touch to the composition.
A fantastic photo, with beautiful natural colors, very good lighting and excellent sharpness.

P.S. I am sorry that the weather in Madeira was not what we always like, sun and good weather that makes us enjoy much more, I had very bad weather when I went, even the airport had to be closed for two days, with a big problem for the tourists who had to leave and those who had to land, diverted to other places.
