Holy Cross Church, a photo from Coimbra, North

Photographer's Note

Founded in 1131 outside the protecting walls of Coimbra, it was the most important monastic house of the Portuguese monarchy. Dedicated to the Order of St. Augustine, the Monastery was granted numerous papal privileges and royal grants, which allowed the accumulation of a considerable patrimony, at the same time as it consolidated its position on the politico-institutional and cultural scene. Its school was essential on medieval times and also a meeting point for the intellectual and power elites. Its scriptorium was responsible for the propaganda machine of King Afonso Henriques, being not strange at all his decision to be buried exactly in Santa Cruz of Coimbra.

The single nave leads to the main chapel containing the tombs of the first two kings of Portugal, Afonso Henriques and Sancho I.

Nothing remains of the early Romanesque Monastery. It is known that it had only one nave and a high tower in the façade, as typical of the Augustine-Romanesque constructions, but none of those elements subsisted. In the first half of the 16th century, the Monastery was completely reformed by King Manuel's order, this monarch having assumed the Monastery tutelage.

hola manuel que bonita perspectiva de la fachada de esta iglesia. me gusta que incluyeras el cafe de la esquina. le da un aire mucho mas relajado la composicion. un dia de invierno, sin duda... per con mucha iluminacion. buen trabajo. gabriel

Una gran definición y la única pena es el cielo nubloso.

Hallo Manuel.. I was in Coimbra once, about ten years ago. I remember I was impressed by the magnificient architecture of the old city, even if it needed a bit of renovation. Now I see in your pic the renovation had place.
Very good perspective from the lower angle.. good colours and composition.

Interesting to see the church in this setting with the restaurant next door and all the umbrellas. There looks to be some very ornate decoration on the facade.

Uma cidade fantástica para fotos infidáveis de bons exemplos da História da Arquitectura Portuguesa. O exemplo aqui apresentado é um deles.
Muito bom enquadramento desta igreja e mosteiro, com uma vista previligiada da fachada, onde se podem apreciar vários estilos arquitectónicos e esta simpática esplanada em 1ºplano. Muito bem!

Hola Manuel!

Bonita fotografia de esta historica y preciosa iglesia. Me gusta por que no solo es una foto de una iglesia sino que nos muestras un poco lo que debe ser la vida cotidiana alrededor de la iglesia. En definitiva un bonito lugar donde pasear tranquilamente. Buena composición y tal vez sea una lastima el cielo tan oscuro.

Bonita imagem de Coimbra, quase que faz lembrar as Praças italianas ou espanholas, não fosse os sinais de desorganização urbanística, os prédios ao fundo.
Penso que a luz está bem conseguida, assm como a composição.

Manuel, cette photo donne bien l'ambiance de cette ville universitaire très riche en monuments anciens.
J'ai tenté un WS pour redresser un peu les déformations dues à la perspective mais on perd de la photo.
