Photographer's Note

Circle of Life is a phrase used in the Lion King Musical by the father lion to explain to his lion son the sad truth that older generation must pass away making space for the following young generation.

I was not sure whether I should post this photo here because it is very personal. But I thought one can certainly learn about the world through this photography, and there are no people in it, not counting the priest. And why can we show weddings and not funerals?
The picture was taken in the church of St. Catherine in Ryglice, a little village in the Southeast Poland. It is about 26 km from my hometown Tarnow. It was taken at my father’s funeral.
This is why: NO POINTS PLEASE!

My sadness and contemplation of my father’s life didn’t stop me from noticing the beauty of the celebration and some of the decorative details. In the middle of the church you see a coffin surrounded by some funeral wreaths. This was the only photo I took because I obviously didn’t want to lose any moment of the actual celebration. It was a quick snap with my phone.

The celebration like that in the Catholic Poland , typically consists of a rosary prayer by mourners, followed by a Mass. There are some more special prayers over the coffin and then the coffin is taken to the cemetery with the people following it there. After some additional prayers the coffin is placed in the grave.

In addition to the wreaths, I really liked the church itself. I took one photo which shows of the exterior but again by phone so I hope to be able to take another photo of it with a real camera very soon.
