Photographer's Note

I had the satisfaction to visit the beautiful old town of Gdansk about twenty years ago. It was in the pre-digital times so I have no record of that in my TrekEarth gallery. This time my main destination was the beach near Rowy, however for simplicity, we decided to return to England from the Gdansk Airport. It seemed like a good opportunity to visit the Gdansk old town before going to the airport. Sadly the roads along the Polish coast are slightly unpredictable and it took us an additional hour or more to actually arrive there. We were worried that while trying to get to the airport we may get stuck in the traffic again so our visit in the old town was very very brief. The main street of Gdansk old town is called ulica Dluga (Long Street) which culminates in Dlugi Targ (Long Market). This photo was taken half way through the Long Street towards the Long Market with the characteristic Town Hall tower in the centre. The street was flooded by crowds and I was surprised how the artist was unaffected by the presence of people around him. In fact I watched him for a while and he was almost asleep. When he noticed my presence he started to draw again. Maybe he just pretended to be an artist while selling somebody else's works?
