Photographer's Note

Krakow was the city that saw Pope John Paul II grow, and I sincerely expected to find many memorabilia and also many markets dedicated to him where the faithful usually stop to buy a souvenir of the pilgrimage. In fact I saw very little of this, one of the few stalls with religious objects I found in the covered market, the effect of light in the evening has allowed me to get this quite unusual composition. On the contrary, I saw a large number of tourists from all over the world in Zakopane, the mountain resort where the Pope went skiing, and where they built a huge sanctuary that I will show you later.

LA BANCARELLA DELLA FEDE

Cracovia è stata la città che ha visto crescere Papa Giovanni Paolo II, e sinceramente mi aspettavo di trovare molti elementi a ricordo ed anche molti mercatini a lui dedicati in cui i fedeli di solito si fermano a comprare un ricordo del pellegrinaggio. In realtà ho visto ben poco di tutto questo, una delle poche bancarelle con oggetti religiosi l'ho trovata nel mercato coperto, l'effetto della luce alla sera mi ha consentito di ottenere questa composizione abbastanza insolita. Al contrario, ho visto una grande presenza di turisti da tutto il mondo a Zakopane, la localita di montagna in cui il Papa andava a sciare, e dove hanno costruito un mega santuario che magari vi mostrero' in seguito.

Almost like a nightlight. There is a lot of money in religion unfortunately. But if the trinkets give comfort? nice sharp image full of study.

Yes, this is certainly a religious stall, no denying that.
Obviously its the start strong contrasts of light and shadow which make this one stand out so well. the empty space above and below the open stall really does benefit the scene, usually we try to avoid such empty spaces inside the frame...not this time. Very effective. cheers

A good daily life scene from the tourist market in Krakow. The sales staff look bored waiting for customers to rarive and are having a quiet chat. Good repetition and light contrasts with superb sharpness. Tfs!

You composed this photo as symmetrically as was possible. Fortunately you couldn't tell the shopkeepers to respect the symmetry, so they provide the irregular features that any picture needs to be dynamic. They look like they don't have much to do, so they have plenty of time for a conversation. The dark areas at the top and bottom, and the icy blue shelves on the sides, complement the warm light inside the shop perfectly. You handled this excellent observation with perfect exposure.

A nice night shot of this religious stall. The broad dark frame makes the illuminated stall stand out so well. The seller doesn`t seem to take notice of you as he seems to be more interested to chat with the other person. Fine work:) TFS.

curious so few stores selling religious articles, in fátima, lourdes, vatican and aparecida there are thousands of them.I liked the visual aspect of the objects and personages surrounded by darkness.nice variety of objects, many not religious.

This is like a clandestine view into the lives of these two people obsessed with religion.
I suppose that is because we seem to be looking into their house, through an illuminated window.
On close observation, of course, it becomes clear that the religious objects are for sale!
It's an unusual but well observed photographic opportunity which you have recorded with excellent clarity.

l'ho indovinato subito che la foto proveniva dal mercato coperto. Per quanto riguarda il Papa, anch'io sono rimasto piacevolmente colpito dalla discrezione con cui viene celebrato, non c'è quella mercificazione così tipica dei luoghi santi, persino a Chestokova è tutto molto più discreto.

A shop full of colours but with two people who seem to be bored. No customers.
Because of the religious art, the woodwork and the dark environment I first thought that this was a shop in a church or cathedral. So you took the picture in the covered market of Krakow.

This is truly a great shot Luciano!

From the thumbnail it looks like lights behind church windows and when the photo appears you can actually discover the many religious objects... And then that couple, waiting for buyers, chatting a little, maybe tired after a long day...

I suppose Krakow still does not use fully the touristic potential of Karol Wojtyla.

Brilliant photo here! This is you second pic from this market and not less impressive than the previous one. I love it! The stand seems to be floating in the air!
There is this repeated motif of the window with great dark framing.
