Photographer's Note
Taken during the marathon in Rotterdam, which was held last sunday. The day started wet and cold but the weather got better during the day, as you can see here.
I tried some panning shots to visualize the speed in running, I like the technique, and this was one of the results, not very good, but I liked it anyway.
Bert's picture of the top of the professional male runners is here.
I have uploaded the original color version as a workshop.

I've been trying that myself, with bikes :) I as far as I can tell your shutter speed is veery slow, tough to do it handheld. In my tries, something between 1/20 and 1/30s already gives great feeling of movement.
The problem here is that when a person runs it also moves a bit vertically so quite tought to get is sharp with the slow speed but I see your point here and it would work great to have the sharp bodies and blured hands and legs :)
Anyway I like the whole idea and the contrast here.

NIcely planned experimental shot. So panned with a low shutter speed, yes I like it too. If there's any criticism it's that you seemed to average the speed of the group in panning, rather than fix on any particular runner. It might have been nice to have had just one sharp head, though maybe that's just too conventional. Is this the start of a series.

Without even looking at your note, I already thought this must have been taken in Rotterdam! And yes it was.
I like it, I like the motion and the disformation of the feet - while their faces are pretty sharp. Those feet are almost like crooked skis by the way. :)
Background is nice too, with the all familiar big-city flats.

Hi Rinie
Very Nice shot. It's like painting.
I like the speed you give to this picture.
Really well done.

Hi Rinie - I like this too - it is a nice experiment - the guywith the glasses gives the overall picture just about enough of a clear point of focus to make it work - almost like a zoom effect.

Hi Rinie!
You captured this scene on a clever way! I like the blurry effects made by runners and long shutter speed - converting this photo in b/w was a very good idea! Great job!

Yep, that's the appropriate way to show people running, your shutter speed is terrific, couldn't be better!
Although there are blown out areas, I think it quite matches the dynamic mood of your image, that's more a good point than a flaw IMO.
Now for the content of the image, it looks like it's a senior race, I suspect the kenyans, ethiopians and other long range runners have already passed a while ago...
Funny how they're equiped too, there's someone with a large vest too, not very efficient for running uunless the wind pushes from behind...
Had you waited half an hour more and perhaps you'd have runners in tuxedos or high heeled boots ;-D....

It's an artwork this picture, Rinie! I like very much this motion blur with the nearly sharp head of the man with the glasses and the beard. It seems that we are running with them. Very well done!

WOOOW, this is great, Rinie. I like this technique and this surprising result. The curves created by their shoes gives a very dyamic feeling and a very very special compo. It is really good in B/W.

I love this shot Rinie, effect perhaps isn't 100% intentional but who cares (just edit your note to say that this is exactly what you wanted and I would have believed you ;-).
Great sense of movement, blown highlights don't bother me one bit, BW was a good choice.
I have uploaded a workshop to show even grittier version, don't think it's better but to suggest different option.

Great one, Rinie, and I do agree, although is not the best example of panning shot, the result is very dynamic and achive to transmit this sensation of hardwork from behalf the runners, as well as the chaos involving in a popular race. Perfection in the imperfection. Keep showing us.
Take care.

Bonjour Rinie! comment ça va aujourd'hui? ;o)
Such an attractive image, looks like an experiment that turned very well... You really are good at "steeling" moments out of life, quiet moments like the "Pfffffff shot" or in mouvement like this one. I keep looking, I keep liking it more and more... Just great!

hi rinie, somehow i love those blurred action shots but this one is exceptional imo: the effect of moving legs is tremendous; plus b&w which limits this photo to the core - the blurr effect;
nice, really nice;
have a nice day, jerzy

Hello Rinie,
Very nice photo. The effect you created here is very nice. It is almost like a film. And while I was scrolling the photo down to read some other comments, the were almost running away from the screen, escpecially the feet group the left were rolling very dynamic.
Just test it, scrol a bit up and down, and you will get dizzy eyes;)
Wonderful photo!

Hi Rinie, very exciting pic this one with the motion streaking across the screen! The combi of the motion streaked horizontals (the architectural lines) and the streaked curves (the shoes) is very dynamic and graphic and the b/w very well chosen. Xcellent job!

This is an interesting result, Rinie. I like the blur as you captured it. There is a sort of exhausted feel from your point of view as if you were also running. Everything around is just a blur and sound is drowned out and all focus is internal rather than external.
You know what it makes me think of is a scene in Sergio Leone's spaghetti western, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, in which "The Ugly" is running around deliriously looking for the grave with the gold and the camera starts to spin to evoke that. Anyway... I really like it for the feel it evokes.
Oh, and one last thing that I find funny is how the last guy was captured. His upper body seems detached from his lower body in a cartoon character sort of way.
I probably wouldn't mind seeing this in color, with all the colors of their shirts blurred. Nicely done, Rinie.

Not very good... Not Very Good!!!!!!??????
I think this is superb! I LOVE the effect Rinie- bravo.
I'm going to try and duplicate your settings the next time I'm at my brothers triathlons. This is truly unlike any other sports shot I have ever seen. I also like your choice of b&w in enhancing the details of the blur.
Well done Rinie!

Hi Rinie
Very effective use of a slow shutter speed to add blur, which accentuates the sense of movement & dynamism. A superb tonal range, & good choice for b&w. Well done!

Rinie, this shot is GREAT!
have you been running at the same pace they have to achieve such result?
just a curiosity: why not a color version for us to compare?

a beautiul image Rinie.. Sorry if I missed it.. I love the panning here. How was it in color?.. I would love to see it.

one time I ran NYc marathon wtih a small Olympus XA,even though the camera was small, it was very tiring to have it always in my hands...

AWESOME! How dynamic. Although its blrry it still has very good sharpness. i.e its not messy blurry. Just looking at the feet of the runners makes my eyes dart all over the place. I love this photo.

HI Rini,
I just missed your art work.
It is realy art!
A secret: I ran the Rotterdam marathon three times. At 25 it starts feeling haevy and at 30 sometimes uoy hit the wall (of the Kralingse bos). And then at 40 you are nearly there and the last part on the Coolsingel you try to run straigth up.
I got the feeling again. You never walk allone
Thanks,
Hendrik

Excellent shot in slow motion Rinnie, you have also discovered that 1/6th is the best speed for these shots. Well done - Izzet

I've been meaning to comment on this pic for awhile now Rinie, I think it's very well done. The sense of motion is great on it. I don't understand why you don't think it's very good. Cheers!
