Church of the Holy Trinity, a photo from Kauno, South

Photographer's Note

In the bg is the Church of the Holy Trinity within the grounds of the Kaunas Priest Seminary. The statue commemorates Motiejus Valančius, one of the most influential and versatile Lithuanians of the 19th century.

"His services to the Lithuanian cause were lasting and important. His opposition to the Russian government and the tactics he employed in resisting its policies, particularly Lithuanian press ban. He sponsored the illegal practice of printing Lithuanian books in East Prussia and smuggling them into Lithuania by knygnešiai (Lithuanian book smugglers opposed to Russian attempts at enforcing the Cyrillic script), served to stimulate the emergence of the Lithuanian national movement. An educator, and able Church administrator, historian and ethnographer, and a talented writer, Valančius was the bishop in Kaunas from 1849–1875." He died in 1875. More info here:

The bg church was built between 1624-1634 AD in the late Renaissance style with some Gothic details. Lithuanian guides described the style as Northern European Renaissance style: "This Evangelical-Lutheran Church, is a nice example of the late Renaissance period, which survived inside the Old Town although the Polish-Lithuanian state Baroque style started to dominate that time and influenced the style of numerous churches and monasteries, which marked the victory of Catholicism over Reformation movement."

Hello Chris,
The statue makes a fine focal point and is nicely counterbalanced by the church tower. The whole is perfectly exposed with excellent colours and sharpness. Agreeable warm/cool tonal contrasts and some lovely details to be observed in the brick paving.

It's a nice composition with the well placed statue balancing the small tower. My favourite details of this photo are the stones on the ground nearest to us. They are beautifully coloured and form an attractive pattern. Generally the colours and clarity are impressive.

Hi Chris,
That is one beautiful capture. The brick colored tiles on the clear sky background made is so prominent. I like the way you included some of the bricked pavement. Finally inclusion of the statue as a foreground is a masterstroke.

La statue envoie mon regard vers le devant de l'église ce qui donne un certain dynamisme à l'image. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails de l'église de la Sainte-Trinité. Il y a un bon contraste entre les couleurs de l'image. Bonne journée.

Beige painted wall gave an exquisite backdrop to the brown statue and red bricks pavement, Chris, a combination of colors that is pleasant to the eyes.

It is amazing that these churches have lasted the test of time. With TLC of course. The style of architecture seems to be prevalent throughout this area of Europe. A very pleasing one at that. I see storybooks of old in this presentation. Awesome capture.

The colours are beautiful and so well-saturated in this fine sunlight. The yellow walls and orange roofs look great and also the cobbles in the foreground add some nice tones. Good vertical composition with the statue also well included in the foreground.
