Photographer's Note

This is from Campo de Fiori ('Field of flowers'), one of the most famous outdoor market places in Rome. I was staying a few blocks away in a small bed & breakfast on my first visit to Rome in 1969, so I came here almost every day for the nearly three weeks I spent in the city.

I suppose this was one of my first attempts ever to take a photo inside a crowd. Technically this scan of an Agfacolor CT18 slide is of course of a very low quality, but I still like it because it represents the start of a style of photography that still gives me the greatest pleasure.

In the WS is another - unrelated - Roman crowd in the summer of 1969.

What would are now after fifty two years ago, much of the people are nor more on this world.

For an analogue film / slide shot and scan from so long ago the quality is quite good. Reminds me of the outdoor fish markets in Naples although this one has fruit and vegetables as well. Tfs!

maybe today you would wait for a better position of the personages in the scenery before to register the moment. anyway there are many nice details to see here and I liked the other image too, looks the walls of the city were much more dirty than today.

Hi Gert,two beautiful Roman memories even today. The photo in the WS made me change my mind about the tourist flow in 69, there was no one under the arcade of San Pietro, but the Trevi fountain was already very crowded. And the main photo allows me to see how people traded 50 years ago, without many bureaucratic and technological tasks, but also in decidedly worse hygienic conditions. 2 more good oldies from Rome. The market one has great DOF and plenty of interaction going. I've also had to convert a lot of old scans to B&W and they often come up quite well as has your Trevi one.

Hello Gert,

You spent quite a lot of time in Rome. I was twice but only a few days. Amazing that you preserved your style and interest in photography during these more than 50 years. Probably because you are a journalist. As a physicist, in Campo dei Fiori, I was more interested in the monument of Giordano Bruno.
Nice scene from the market. The prizes are in Italian lire.

Your w/s may have proved difficult but this has scanned well. The colours are fine and you have obtained a good dof.
What a busy market supplying a wide array of products. Your close attention has created this busy atmosphere; we almost feel people are pushing past your camera!
Your w/s, proves that even so long ago, Rome was a very popular, tourist destination!

Three weeks in Rome. That can already count.
Great to have your time going anywhere unhurried.
You framed the trays with fish well with the visiting people.
In the WS I notice that most people seem to be doing things other than looking at the fountain.

The woman on the right sells the photo, she indicates that something was a bit stinky at the market. Otherwise a happy glimpse of life without distancing and masks some 50 years before this COVID-nightmare.

Hello Gert, a good composition giving us a view right through to the other side of the market with people doing their daily shopping.
The tricky light is managed really well.
An interesting mix of items for sale.
Amazing scene from Trevi, an multitude of people, so things haven't changed there then!

These two images could be main uploads in their own right and yet, as you rightly observed, they share a common theme of a crowded place, in spite of different mediums and different reasons for the gatherings.
I like the 60s dresses in the main pic and the levels of people in the WS.
