Gavelli Castle - Sant’Anatolia di Narco (PG)

Erected on a slope dominated by the crags of Monte Coscerno (1684 m), which face the rocky walls of Monte dell'Eremita and the Muraglie della Valcasana, the late medieval castle of Gavelli still appears today, to those who climb from the valley floor of the river Nera, an almost inaccessible place.
The millenary human presence, which has developed an agricultural-pastoral economy still strongly legible in the structure of today's landscape, has not altered the naturalistic and environmental beauty of these places: some toponyms evoke the ancient presence of the wolf and bear, while the golden eagle still nests in the cliffs of the mountains around Gavelli.
Gavelli, "clavellum" in medieval documents, to underline the strategic position of the castle and its function of "access key" to the mountain territory of Valnerina, was part of the possessions of the Lombard duchy of Spoleto.
