Photographer's Note

Back to Sicily in 2015.

The entrance to the central section of this marvellous town in southern Sicily, midway between Ragusa to the west and Syracuse on Sicily's east coast.

The Porta Reale (Royal Gate) stands in the Corso Vittorio Emanuele, which displays on each side as one walks westward, some absolutely beautiful Baroque buildings, arrayed around and between three piazzas. The Porta Reale itself was constructed in 1838. The entire town had to be rebuilt after a violent earthquake in 1693, with nearly all the main buildings erected in the Baroque style which distinguishes the town.
