The Basilica of Santa Maria Novella is one of the largest churches of Florence and stands in the square.
The Church of Santa Maria Novella was the center of the Dominican order in Florence. The church has a Romanesque style outside with white and green marble with geometric designs and a Gothic style inside.
Its construction was started in 1246.
The old Dominican basilica was rebuilt in Romanesque-Gothic style in 1200. Valuable is the green and white marble facade, was completed by around 1470. All 'inside are masterpieces such as "The Trinity" by Masaccio, the famous' crucified' by Giotto and Brunelleschi, and in the transept, the lively renaissance pictorial cycles of Ghirlandaio and Filippino Lippi
