A narrow streets of Montalcino with hundreds of small shops and boutiques, charming antique shops....
Located on rising to about 100 m hill of Montalcino is visible from afar. But you have to choose him specifically, because, although it is only 40 km from Siena and 100 km from Florence, the highway won’t passes through here. Anyway, this position on the sidelines of Montalcino owes its existence. When the neighborhood of the city fought wars with each other, Fortezza defending access to it was the last refuge for local residents.
Montalcino was founded in the tenth century, but most of the buildings from the twelfth century. Its outer walls (about 4 km) can be overcome in time. Leads to the town of six gates. Squares and narrow streets of this rise, the fall. Sometimes these drops are so large that if it were not attached to buildings, railings, it would be difficult to move. But with a virtually anywhere in the clearances of streets you can admire the beautiful countryside - hills and valleys covered with vineyards and forests.
There Montalcino is the home of Brunello wine. It is situated in the southern part of the province of Siena and is one of the five comune that are part of the Val d’Orcia, which since 2004 has been a patrimony of UNESCO. Perched on a hill (567mt.) with breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside Montalcino enjoys a microclimate, which, together with the mineral rich soil, has played an essential role in producing one of Italy’s top wines. Brunello wine is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes and in this territory this grape is known as Brunello.
