Cerberus

Cerberus was a dog with three heads and a snake's tail, a hellish monster of ancient pagan mythology, son of Tifeo and Echidna.
Virgil (Aeneid, VI, 471-423) and Ovid (Metamorphosis, IV, 450-451) place him to guard the Avernus, to prevent the shadows from going out and the living from entering. The capture of him was the twelfth and last effort of Hercules.
Among the mythological and poetic characters he is the one whose specific characteristic is an unfulfilled hunger.
Although derived from the Virgilian Underworld, Cerberus takes on typically medieval connotations: it is a monstrous fair not only because it has three heads, but also for the human details (beard, hands, faces) on the dog's body.

Amazing this three heads statue.
Though it is a bit decayed sculpture, we can see the imagination of the sculpturer.

La sculpture est bien placée dans le cadrage. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails de la sculpture Cerberus. La lumière rehausse les couleurs de l'image. Bonne sorée.

Hello Silvio,
The third head is probably looking in the other direction and is therefore not visible in this photo.
The break in the stones makes me think that this dog has been beheaded before.
As long as there aren't real three-headed dogs around...
