Photographer's Note

The nr.2 line in Trieste, better known as "Tram de Opcina", is a narrow gauge "part-time" cable car. During the most of its 5170m path the car relies on usual adhesion, but in the steeper 800m, where the climb reaches a peak of 26%, the cars leave the propulsion to a couple of shuttles. A strong, 42mm diameter steel cable connects the rising train with the descending one, allowing to climb the first 170m of height difference.

Here the descending train has just left the upper station. Notice that the overhead line is not used on this part of the travel, since all the energy is given by the cable pulley system. On board systems are fed by a back-up battery.

On the background, the Costa Classica is visible, moored to the "Stazione Marittima".

Technical: contrast mask and boosted saturation.
