Photographer's Note

The well-preserved sea fort in Methoni town is a very beautiful part of greek history that remind us the glorious but hard days of past.
The small octangonal sea fort is built on an islet south of the castle , known by Pausanias as the ‘Mothon Rock’. Bourtzi(fort,wall,arab.burc,turk.burdz,med.greek pourtzios)serves as a seat for the guards that survey the harbor,as a lighthouse,a prison,or even an ultimate shelter for the inhabitants in time of siege. It consists of the main tower and the surrounding walls.Canon embrasures surround the first floor chamber of the tower. One can discern beam-holes on the walls that would support at least four wooden storeys, presently perished. The erection of the fort (castello ala mare) is initiated just before 1500 by the Venetians, along with a similar construction in Nauplion, and is completed by Ottomans during the 16th century. Finally, during the second Venetian Rule(1685-1715) the surrounding wall with battlements is added.
