Photographer's Note

Kerkini is an artificial lake that was formed in 1932 with the creation of a dam on the river Strymon. Located in the prefecture of Serres.
Kerkini protected by the Ramsar Convention and an area of the European network "Natura 2000 ". In the Kerkinis encounter many species of mammals such as jackal, the wolf, the wildcat, the otter, the weasel, deer, rabbit, boar, etc. There are 10 species of amphibians and about 20 species of reptiles. The fish fauna is also rich because there are 30 major fish species of eel. The area around the lake have recorded some 300 bird species. The Dalmatian Pelican and Pygmy Cormorant who live there are unique to species threatened with extinction. There are many rare raptors such as golden eagle, the eagle, the peregrine falcon and the area is a unique field of research on wetlands and their management.
