La festa della Pasqua cristiana è mobile, viene fissata di anno in anno nella domenica successiva al primo plenilunio successivo all'Equinozio di Primavera (il 21 marzo). Questo sistema venne fissato definitivamente nel IV secolo. Nei secoli precedenti potevano esistere diversi usi locali sulla data da seguire, tutti comunque legati al calcolo della Pasqua ebraica. In particolare alcune chiese dell'Asia seguivano la tradizione di celebrare la pasqua nello stesso giorno degli ebrei, senza tenere conto della domenica, e furono pertanto detti quartodecimani. Ciò diede luogo ad una disputa, detta controversia quartodecimana, fra la chiesa di Roma e le chiese asiatiche.

Dunque, nella Chiesa cattolica, la data della Pasqua è compresa tra il 22 marzo ed il 25 aprile. Infatti, se proprio il 21 marzo è di luna piena, e questo giorno è sabato, sarà Pasqua il giorno dopo (22 marzo); se invece è domenica, il giorno di Pasqua sarà la domenica successiva (28 marzo). D'altro canto, se il plenilunio succede il 20 marzo, quello successivo si verificherà il 18 aprile, e se questo giorno fosse per caso una domenica occorrerebbe aspettare la domenica successiva, cioè il 25 aprile.

La chiesa ortodossa segue il calendario giuliano e quindi la data della Pasqua può variare dal 4aprile all'8 maggio.

Easter and the holidays that are related to it are moveable feasts, in that they do not fall on a fixed date in the Gregorian or Julian calendars (both of which follow the cycle of the sun and the seasons). Instead, the date for Easter is determined on a lunisolar calendar, as is the Hebrew calendar.

In Western Christianity, using the Gregorian calendar, Easter always falls on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25 inclusively.[36] The following day, Easter Monday, is a legal holiday in many countries with predominantly Christian traditions. In Eastern Orthodox Churches which continue to use the Julian calendar for religious dating, Easter also falls on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25 inclusive of the Julian calendar. (The Julian calendar is no longer used as the civil calendar of the countries where Eastern Christian traditions predominate.) In terms of the Gregorian calendar, due to the 13 day difference between the calendars between 1900 and 2099, these dates are between April 4 and May 8 inclusive.
