Photographer's Note

Another view of the Santorini Caldera from the lovely hilltop town of Oia, much more authentic than Fira (Thera) and with far fewer souvenir shops catering for the cruise ships that dock below. The volcano last erupted around 3,500 years ago with a volcanic explosive index of VEI 5. Vesuvius in 79AD was a VEI 4. They go up as high as VEI 8. Yellowstone, Lake Taupo in New Zealand and Lake Toba in Sumatera all hit VEI 8 & would have affected global climate for decades with the enormous amount of volcanic ash released into the atmosphere.
