Photographer's Note

Think of Crater Lake in Oregon, but plonked in the middle of the Aegean sea, with the sea flooding the caldera instead of fresh water and a picturesque town of whitewashed stone houses and blue roofed churches hugging the cliffs instead of pine trees. Then you have this place, which is Oia atop the slopes of a dormant volcano (Santorini) that last exploded very violently around 3,600 years ago (V5 level, the highest, Vesuvius in 79 ad was a V3). The tsunamis and thick ash are said to have destroyed the Minoan Civilization on nearby Crete. The legend of Atlantis has Santorini as one theory.
