Photographer's Note

The harbour and upper town of Symi are joined by the 'Kali Strata' [Good Street] a steep street consisting of around 500 broad steps for use by people on foot and by donkeys and mules. The street is lined by large houses mostly neo-classical in style which at present are in various stages of dereliction, restoration and habitation. There is also a set of steps, joining the harbour with another part of the upper town, which is not so elegant but is still impressive. This is known as 'Kataraktis' [waterfall]
Nowadays there is a road for motor vehicles skirting the town and continuing to the south of the island but much of the old town remains impassable due to the steep and narrow nature of its streets.
NOTE. See WS for correction of some overexposure at top RH corner.
