Photographer's Note

This shot represents a piece of history and future of city of Patras.
The modern miracle, bridge or Rio-Antirio.Comparing to scale the Rion-Antirion bridge with world famous bridges demonstrates the magnitude of the project undertaken.
The Tatara bridge in Japan and the Normandy bridge in France are the cable-stayed bridges with the longest spans in the world (respectively 890 meters and 856 meters). With a reference span of 560 meters, the Rion-Antirion bridge shall rank in the top 10 list of the world longest span for cable-stayed bridges. However with its 4 pylons (compared to the usual set of 2), it is the cable-stayed bridge with the longest suspended deck (2,252 meters) in the world.
Such outstanding deck length outperforms the total deck length of the well-known Golden Gate suspension bridge (1,966 meters).
On the other side the castle of Rio.A glorious castle a piece of history near the bridge.
In 1499 the first fortification of the pass was made by Bayazid II, smaller in area and with a double circuit and moat. In 1532 it was taken by the Spaniards and Andrea Doria, and retaken by the Turks. In 1603 the Knights of Malta wrought significant destruction. In 1687 it was taken by Morosini. Drastic repairs were made and it received the form it has today: new towers - bastions, strengthened ramparts. The fortress was siezed by the Turks in 1715, and in 1828, after a siege, the Turks surrendered it to General Maison.

It was repaired and handed over to the Greeks. The Fortress (castro) was used as a prison for a considerable time. During World War II the Germans established themselves there.

No excavations have been carried out in the area of the Fortress.
Two big structures in contrary directions....
