Photographer's Note

Stavronikita monastery in Mount Athos is one of the twenty orthodox monasteries of the monastic community of Agion Oros. It was founded in the 11th century and after it was abandoned for a couple of hundred years it was re-founded and restored in the year 1533 by Patriarch Jeremiah.

Most of the structure dates from the 16th century with the exception of the tower and the main church which are both from the early period of the monastery's history. The tower is actually thought to be even older as it was probably a single structure serving as a watch-tower from as early as the 9th century.

The monastery suffered from numerous fires during the ages, but the monks with the help of benefactors always managed to restore the damages. Today is in a pristine condition and it is inhabited by around 25 monks. Of particular interest are the frescoes in the main church by Theofanes the Cretan, which are regarded as one of the finest remaining examples of 16th century Greek art.
