Photographer's Note

Water of the Sorge river floods the polder landscape near Bergenhusen, Schleswig-Holstein, on December 28th, 2014. It was a deep low-pressure system that provoked heavy rainfalls and storms in wide parts of Northern Germany.
The three rivers Eider, Treene and Sorge and their surroundings, form the largest lowland area in Schleswig-Holstein. The rich nature and large biological diversity make it one of the most outstanding landscapes in the state. Characteristic are the expansive green depressions of the Eider, Treene and Sorge rivers with interspersed highland and lowland moors and natural shallow lakes. It is one of the largest wet grassland areas in Northern Europe as well and it is registered in the list of wetlands of international importance. Large parts of this region are recognised as important bird areas.

Hello Harriet,
A very attractive landscape despite the flooding. I like your composition and the framing offered by the rustic wooden fence. The flooded ditch in the foreground makes a good lead-line toward the focal point offered by the tree. Very nicely illuminated with agreeable natural colours. Excellent clarity. Flat lnads are due to have floods, as nature takes its toll every once in a while. Yet, with the snow patching white and good daylight on, this could form a nice photo - and you taken the advantage superbly.

Hi Harriet,
The colours that are combined here are very attractive. The deep blue colours of the water and the different beige shades of the dry grass are always attractive together. The foreground fence is also well positioned in the composition. I have seen many pictures on FB from St.Peter-Ording, with water high of the beach. This is really an attractive part of Germany.

Wieder ein interessanter und sehenswerter Beitrag! Du hast den Zaun geschickt einbezogen und damit eine herragende Tiefe im Bild erzeugt. Es ist faszinierend, dass das Foto fast nur aus Braun- und Blautönen besteht und der Schnee macht das Motiv endgültig kalt. Eine wundervolle, sonnige Winterstimmung - Winter so wie man ihn sich wünscht um draußen zu sein..

in questa regione non manca il freddo, ma l'inverno è anche una splendida occasione fotografica per riprendere scene poetiche come questa che uniscono la bellezza dei colori e la particolare asprezza della mnatura.

In this photo it's primarily the colours that please me. There are very fine mild tones of yellow, green and brown, as well as the pale blue sky and the darker water. The wooden fence creates a nice foreground and leads my eye towards the nearest, naked tree and the one further back which still looks fully dressed.

the light has returned but this time it's after heavy rainfalls and the scenery it reveals has very particular wintry features. There's wonderful depth and balance in your composition, there's a superb alternation of contrasting textures and colours, a wonderful arrangement of warm and cold tones. Hallo Harriet,

man kann die klare Winterluft förmlich spüren. Ein stimmungsvolles Bild, dass auch sehr gut in einen Kalender passen würde. Auch in diesem Bild ein hoher Wasseranteil, was es mir sehr sympathisch macht. Wasser in Landschaftsbildern ist für meinen Geschmack wie das Salz in einer Suppe.

Sehr schön, Harriet. Die Stimmung des Augenblicks kommt gut beim Betrachter an.

Despite the flooding, or grace to it, this wonderful winter landscape is very attractive. The cold and frozen landscape is bathed in the pleasant light of the week winter sun and the blue of the water conveys the bitter cold perfectly.

Hello Harriet,

It is so satisfying the needs of wildlife are recognised as well as those of 'man'. There are areas in the fenlands in England that are regarded as special wetlands for birds. Having said that, I travelled across the county, yesterday, and land that is for crop growth looks like wetlands!

This is a shot which has captured the conditions perfectly. The fence and gate make a good f/g anchor for the b/g of watery conditions and reedy grasses.

Taken on my birthday, so how could I not comment? Excellent composition here, with the gate and fence giving plenty of foreground interest, and the frozen ditch taking our eyes into the frame. Technically proficient, and with lovely natural colours. A peach!

It is flooded and snowed in as well. the weather give the illusion of warm with clear blue sky and light. While some place a dealing with the flood, we had a draught in California.
