Photographer's Note

This couple is one of the most important art treasures of Magdeburg cathedral. I alredy showed you the most impressive sculpture of St. Maurice there. This couple, sitting in a small chapel (please see workshop photo), was sculptured about the year 1250 and according to an old tradition it is considered to be the emperor Otto I with his wife Editha. Otto was the founder of the first cathedral built here about the year 950. Otto's foundation charter for "his" cathedral you can see HERE

Experts of art history however meanwhile assume that the sculpture shows the empyreal bridal couple of Jesus and Ecclesia (the church) because of the symbol of the celestial sphere with the 12 star signs and 7 planets in the hand of the ruler.

Anyway - this really impressive sculpture shows a rather "laid-back" and self-confident couple with many wonderful details and there have been children in the cathedral who called them even "cool" ...
