Photographer's Note

final moments in Marseille

Notre-Dame de la Garde is a Catholic basilica built in Neo-Byzantine style at the highest natural elevation in Marseille, on the south side of the Old Port.

It is an important local landmark and the site of a popular annual pilgrimage every year on Assumption Day, August 15. People from Marseille traditionally see Notre-Dame de la Garde as the guardian and the protector of the city.

This picture was among the last I shot in Marseille. On the final evening we went up to the Notre-Dame de la Garde to watch the sun set over the city. The picture shows one of the statues near the bottom of the basilica. A tiny glimpse of the city is visible below.

song title reference: "Someone to watch over me" is a jazz standard composed in 1929 by George and Ira Gershwin. It has been recorded countless times.
