Second in my theme of Finnish Lighthouses.

The image is only included for the theme. I don't consider it a specially good image regarding composition nor sharpness. Why it isn't sharp is a small mystery to me.

The lighthouse is privately owned. Visiting is altough possible. But only after the seabird nesting period is over. Parts of the island are off limits. Entry to the lighthouse was not allowed for the public in 2003.

The Söderskär lighthouse was first lit in 1862. The light has a radius of up to 15 nautical miles. The beacon is 40 meter above sealevel. The lighthouse is octaconal. The first 8 metres in stone and the rest in brick. The tower was strengthened with an outer shell in concrete and railway tracks around 1900.

The lighthouse was manned, by four men and their families, until 1957. The light was turned off in 1989.

The lighhouse was badly neglected after 1989 and was bought by private entrepeneurs in 2003. Restauration is still in progress (spring 2006).
