Tuomiokirkko

A classic photo from Helsinki with the best-known landmark of the city, which also featured in my first post from Finland, but I just couldn’t ignore the light of this beautiful summer evening.

Helsingin tuomiokirkko (Helsinki Cathedral) is located at Senaatintori (Senate Square) in the heart of the city. A Finnish Evangelical Lutheran cathedral in neoclassical style, it was built between 1830 and 1852 as a tribute to Tsar Nicolas I of Russia, who was the Grand Duke of Finland and after whom it was also named until the Finnish independence in 1917. The church was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel, who was also the architect of many other buildings around Senate Square. A statue of Emperor Alexander II of Russia is found at the centre of the square.

Indeed, the side light gave special glow onto the columns in shining white marble of the main edifice, long shadows of the people and other objects, and contrast from the statue in dark tones, Lars.
Wonderful frontal POV of the big square and the Cathedral.

Indeed, a classic point of view but always a very effective way of showing this elegant and beautiful cathedral. The people nicely dispersed about the frame enliven the scene and contribute to the mood. A capture made under a sympathetic light and benefiting from agreeable natural tones and very good sharpness.

Hello Lars,
I guess everyone who has been to Helsinki has taken photos of this church, from various angles. I did too, of course, and this was probably my favourite place in the city. The church is magnificent and has such a spectacular location. This photo shows that the most traditional angle, just straight on, works just as well as anything else. The warm light means a lot, but the three groups of people are also perfectly placed in the foreground and on each side of the monument.

Dag Lars,

Ik heb de vertaling moeten opzoeken want dit woord als kathedraal nooit gehoord maar ik spreek geen Fins.
Op deze wijze leer men nog iets.
Uw foto is opnieuw as altijd groot en perfect afgewerkt.
Met het publiek in de voorgrond maakt het beeld levendig.
Goed foto werk, bedankt.

Hallo Lars,
Inderdaad een klassiek beeld uit Helsinki maar deze kathedraal en de vele trappen roepen bij velen het eerste beeld op over de Finse hoofdstad.
Ik vond deze kathedraal vooral van buiten mooi en niet zo echt het interieur.
De bezoekers staan mooi gespreid over de voorgrond of zitten op diverse plaatsen op de trappen.
De bloemen zorgen voor meer kleur en charme op het plein.

Hi Lars,
spectacular postcard like presentation from Helsinki. I hope to take a similar photo someday.
Quite an interesting light and although it is a northern capital -people are dressed very lightly which introduces a feeling of a summer day. Very pleasant long shadows too.
I like the presence of people throughout the square, it allows to imagine the huge scale of this place.
Very suitable central symmetry here.

yes, classic view indeed. Thats exactly what I was saying to myself when I first viewed it. and the larger version is fantastic. The longer I look at it, the more and more I see and find. love the initial group of tourists standing up front and centre. Follow that with the statue in the middle, and the people sitting up on the steps. wonderful. cheers

Lars, Helsinki cathedral has attractive green domes. The stairs where people like sitting to take rest lead to the imposant monument. A square including a commemorative group of statues and colorful flowers was planned at the cathedral entrance. Fine colors, good image quality and excellent golden light, instructive photo note, regards.
