Photographer's Note

This scene of a Danish ICE train leaving Nykøbing Falster station for Germany was common for decades and will probably be common in the future, but cannot be observed in present.
Vogelfluglinie / Fugleflugtslinien, the shortest connection from Central Europe to Scandinavia, is in the progress of being developped to higher capacities. The main feature will be a combined railway and motorway tunnel of 18 kms below Fehmarnbelt, a highly frequented waterway between Denmark and Germany. This would be useless without expanding Danish and German access streets and railways.

In this case, the old one rail Storstrom Bridge linking Danish islands of Falster and Sjælland will be replaced by a modern two rail and two lane bridge enabling trains to travel with 200 km/h. Work is under construction, so Falster and Lolland have been cut off from ICE traffic, and no more trains are trajected across Fehmarnbelt. Train passengers have to use the longer lines from Copenhagen through Jutland.
