Croatian home is a theater in the City of Vukovar, Croatia. The construction of this project was initiated in 1919 by the Croatian Singing Society Danube. It is believed that this society in some way engaged Freudenreich to somehow prepare a conceptual solution. The possibility of the construction site of the building was not yet certain, as the planned construction site was on a plot of land which was then still owned by Count Eltz.
It was designed by the famous Croatian architect Aleksandar Freudenreich. This building was his first success as an architect. His project won 1st prize.
The building was built from 1922 to 1923.
The interiors were decorated by famous artists such as Dragutin Renarić and others. There were a lot of Art Nouveau works. It was also adorned with a decorative ceremonial curtain on the stage. Its decorations were borders, oval medallions with flowers and a woven inscription "Croatian woman - to the Croats of Vukovar". The curtain had a special destiny: members of the then banned society Hrvatska žena from Zagreb brought it secretly the day before the opening, they almost smuggled it into the building.
As early as 1946, things began that heralded what would follow less than half a century later. Members of the Women's Anti-Fascist Front removed the inscription from the curtain. It was on the occasion of some celebration on December 8, 1946. The Steering Board of the Croatian Home sent a protest in vain to the GO of the Popular Front.
The destruction of Croatian attributes did not stop there. It is indicative that the ground floor of the Croatian Home was demolished in the 1960s, as was the nearby classicist hotel K lavu. The newly created "square" was actually a clearing, and the "Cultural Center" was expanded with an architecturally inappropriate annex.
The home is renovated today. On the entrance hall is a bust of Rene Matoušek, secretary of the Croatian Home Society killed in the Homeland War. The bust was made by the academic sculptor Mladen Mikulin.
