19th century hospital
A tribute to Malgo the courtyard of old Sint-Janshospital
The 19th century hospital complex, after the restoration of 1991.
Sint-Janshospital from 1864. A central corridor on the semi-underground floor, leading to the separate hospital wards.
Due to the evolution of time and a new view on health care and hygiene, new buildings became a necessity from the middle of the 19th century. A hospital with sixteen infirmaries and a main building was built in 1864, around a courtyard. The plans were by architect Isidoor Alleweireldt (1824-1892). For its construction, the brewery, a large part of the garden and the cemetery of the historic hospital had to disappear.
Gradually, the nineteenth-century infirmaries were overcrowded and used to the maximum, especially after 1950. Additional buildings were erected between the various wings, where gardens were laid out for the patients. What was left of the former gardens was also built, on the one hand as an extension of the monastery building due to the increasing number of nuns, on the other hand for the care of the sick and the specialized departments.
I hope you like it

Hello John,
Dull and rainy days don't stop you from making your bicycle tours and also don't stop you from taking good photos. These restored buildings are quite beautiful, especially the attached church, and the black tiles look very good when wet. You managed to capture some details of the clouds and also used the overhanging branches nicely.
Best regards,
Gert

Hi John,
the rainy day was so well pronounced here. Too often I give up on photos on a rainy day, but here I see they can have a beautiful mood with the wet pavement adding a nice touch.
Great capture,

Hi John,
The length of the courtyard is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details of the Sint-Jans hospital. The rain is givng a mysterious mood to the scene. Have a nice day.

Hallo John,
Vele groeten, Paul

Hello John,
A dull, rainy day is no reason to stop photographing, as you so clearly demonstrate! Despite the weather, this is an excellent, sharp photograph of the infirmary and monastery with a fine composition to accentuate the relationship between the buildings, the gardens and the cobbled forecourt.
I like how you have used the overhanging branches for f/g interest and surprisingly, they are not showing autumn colours.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi John.
Wonderful composition with this special courtyard formed by the buildings of the old hospital, ideal for the corner construction with such varied volumes.
Sharpness, lighting, color, and magnificent composition; they are managed to perfection, in this beautiful image.
Good job. I like very much.
You have a good day. Very best regards.
Luis.

Hello John, Thank you for the dedication!
In spite of the rain, it is a nice picture with a splendid atmosphere. The tree branches nicely frame the composition.
I was slightly confused by your note. The Sint-Janshospitaal (St John’s Hospital) is one of the oldest hospital buildings in Europe. The earliest traces date from the middle of the 12th century. I was fascinated by the place and of course, by the Memling paintings there.
Best regards Malgo

Ook dit is een mooie foto, John. Leeg, (bijna) verlaten, regenachtig, grijs. Geen topdag voor foto's (of voor de stad te bezoeken), maar het kan. Goed gebruik van de bladeren van de boom om de witte lucht te verdoezelen. Dat werkt zeker! Ik hoop dat je van de uitstap genoten hebt.
