Photographer's Note

The quince is sort of special fruit in the Skarpari region of Albania. Probably because it has many uses. Firstly it produces beautiful beefy flowers (kids sometimes eat them), secondly the fruit itself is delicious, I know some of you might disagree with me and remind me of "the quincy throat" but you only get the funny throat feeling when you eat unripe fruit. Thirdly the Skrapari ladies can make delicious jam with it (and you have to trust me on this!). Finally and very importantly the Quince fruit has a very long shelf life. In the villages people store it in the attic and use it throughout the winter. Once I popped my head in such old attic full of semi dried quinces and apples and the aroma was so gorgeous I thought I was sent in heaven!

The best variety of quinces that I know it to be found in a village near Tomorri Mountain called Dobrush.
