Photographer's Note

I took this photo in a new restaurant in Berat City. In the look and design it was very much Italianish to me and the food was half Albanian and half Italian. Apart from one bottle on the table which as a original Chianti all the other wines were locally produces and had names like, familly names, village names or just made up ones. Albanians drink has been Raki for a long time but wine is catching up very fast, it is very fashionable and it is seen as "a good for you" drink. There is some tradition in wine making of course but at the moment the wine makers compare their produce with world famous wines and have plenty of information to work on. As a result the quality is getting better and better all the time. Alomst every time that I return to Albania the wines taste better. There are still too many small producer though and although this can be seen as a good thing it is very diffucult for them to reach bigger markets, do decent marketing etc..What the wine makers in Berati Region have is wonderfull grapes of the highest quality, if they capitalise on this and do not go "intensive" they will have much more chance of selling their wines.
