The Albanians, a photo from Tirane, North

Photographer's Note

If you look up as you enter the National museum of History in Tirana, there is a large mural mosaic titled 'The Albanians' that depicts purported ancient to modern figures from Albania's history. This is the central section of the impressive tile mosaic with the red Albanian flag and double headed eagle. If you have a long wait of many hours for a bus to Kosovo as I did, the museum will fill in time.

Hello Chris,
As far as I remember this mosaic is placed quite high above the entrance, so I'm impressed that you managed such a straight photo of such a high quality. It is an important work of art in Albanian history even though it is very much in a style favored by the former regime. When I saw the museum in 2009 the exhibitions mysteriously stopped at the time of the Hoxha regime's rise to power. I was vaguely told the modern section was "temporarily closed". Maybe it still is. It has been said that the present PM, whose father was a big shot during Hoxha days, doesn't like too much negative exposure of the Communist period.

Albania does have a rich history both real and imagined. Have you ever read any of Ismael Kadare's novel - I can highly recommend them?

in fact the quality of the mosaic is special and its drawing well done. anyway, we can recognize the typical socialist style and its pompous heroes of people in the main position. nice image with great quality.
