Photographer's Note

The passing of El Jefe made me look back and reflect. Here is a real oldie from almost twenty years ago. How time flies...

Cuba was the first trip outside of Europe me and my wife made. We crossed the island by train and sometimes hitchhiked our way to our destination.

Highlights included drinking beer from pots, pans and whatever at the carnaval street party in Santiago, staying at homestays with lots of friendly locals and attending the July 26 speeches by Fidel and his comrades.

Looking back that trip was pretty important in my life: I discovered that big, big world outside Europe (and Cuban cigars), I became more and more interested in global politics and it's also where our travel bug really took off.

This picture was shot in Trinidad, a wonderful old colonial town, which back in those days was still relatively untouched by tourism. The nearby beach had only one hotel on it, we stayed at a superb colonial mansion in town for almost no money. The times have changed!

The image was scanned from an analogue print.

This one is for Fidel.
