Photographer's Note

Leaving the barber behind and making our way up the stairs we met this elderly H'mong woman enjoying a snack. Upon seeing us she unfolded the blanket she was carrying and offered to sell it to us. We kept a reasonable safe distance as her 'snack' was moving around everywhere. We did not want to get poke from her snack.

We ended up buying the blanket for 200000 Vietnamese Dong. That's around USD12.5. Sounds cheap to me but I guess we may already have paid too much. Chances are if you know where to look you can get for half the price.

Almost all the tribal people here speak very good english. Sometimes I am very surprised. I asked why and their response was that in their villages they have lots of time and they practice and learn English and any other languages that the tourist speaks. So do not be surprised if they can speak to you in your mother tongue.

It was not too easy to get this shot as her hands was moving around everywhere and I wanted to get her "snack" in the picture as well. I waited until this particular moment before taking the shot. If you have a partner with you, he or she can be very effective in distracting your subject so that one can concentrate on the shot.
