Photographer's Note

The name Khiva is thought of along with visions of ancient cities, khans, the Silk Road, caravans, slave trading and brutality.
The whole walled city is now a United Nations preserved historical monument - if anything a little too well preserved but well worth a visit. Photographically it is challenging because of its monotone character and the wonderful ability of the Soviets to put ugly buildings in the wrong places! In my attempt to make a spectacular (but monochome) wall appear interesting, I had not only to find an interesting angle which highlighted the curves of the wall in the afternoon light, but also had to leave out a particularly bland 1960's office block at the very top of the image.
