All the glorious architecture of Uzbekistan was great but another standout sight for us were the Neolithic petroglyphs at Sarmish-Say in Navoi province.
You have to drive up a remote dirt road to reach Sarmish-Say gorge. See the WS for the road in. Once there you see petroglyphs carved into the rocks showing animals and humans. The petroglyphs are in quite exposed areas but are in remarkable condition given their age.
They were found relatively recently by children from a summer camp that you pass through on the way up the valley.
In the WS there is also a photo showing just how rugged the gorge is.
This is my last posting for Uzbekistan for the time being but I'll do a revisit to Samarkand at some stage.
