Photographer's Note
Best opened in a new tab for better detail.
From the top of the Zoroastrian Tower of Silence, Chilpyk this is the view looking south towards the Amu Darya River. Not far away is the border with Turkmenistan.
When you are on the top of Chilpyk you are not where they used to lay out the dead for birds to cleanse them. Chilpyk was originally 15 metres higher but as it was built out of mud it has been eroded away. A reminder - Chilpyk is not a natural hill.

Bonjour, cher Ian,
Merci de nous faire profiter de sites étonnants.
Ici, la vue mélange habilement parcelles cultivées et terres abandonnées ou presque.
Un paysage fantomatique.
Amitiés.

Hello Ian, I found it on Google Map. I must have gone nearby on the way to Nukus, I must check, maybe I have a picture from the road. Fantastic view of the river below.
Best regards MAlgo

Hello Ian,
This picture gives us a very different impression of the surroundings.
Here the region seems a lot less desert-like or steppe-like.
Even large fields and water are visible.
It remains of course a very special place.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Ian,
I saw it was very close to the river, so I had expected a view like this. It is still very different from the desert like surroundings of the first photo. I saw the same huge contrasts in short distances in Ladakh, Kashmir, and of course Egypt.
Regards,
Gert

Hello Ian,
There are a few different types of landscape in the same photograph from the top of the hill, to a sandy desert area, fields and then the river.
A river that floods will give nutrients to the land, either side and cause this greenery, cultivated land.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Ian,
A very nice view of this flat landscape. The low vegetation, fields and some water create a nice layered composition. Fine lighting too and the rock is well included in the left hand foreground.

Hi Ian,a rare green landscape in this dry country, just because close to one of the most important rivers,i like the colors and the sharpness despite the distance. Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Hello Ian, an excellent idea to show the view from the top of The Tower of Silence, as a follow up to seeing this place from ground level.
I like that you included a part of the Tower as a reference point.
An interesting landscape from this high vantage point.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hi Ian,
wow, it is quite impressive to realize that this hill is not natural.
They must have put a lot of work in it!
The view is stunning. Even though the landscape is quite flat with the variety of textures it appear very eye catching.
Excellent reportage,
M
